Like with any other movie adaptation of a famous book, 1984 had several differences and similarities between the original writing by George Orwell and the film directed by Michael Radford. Whereas the novel revolved around the manipulation of the masses into believing in something that didn’t really exist, the film focused more on the plot and the dramatization of event. One similarity between the two, however, was the focus on war, government, and authority. In the same way, both follow the theme of conformity and societal control.
That said, consider the following key differences between the 1984 book and the on-screen adaptation: a) The Salute The movie features the salute as a gesture of devotion. The salute is performed by holding the arms up and crossing the wrists to form a small V shape. This does not appear anywhere in the book. b) Newspeak In the movie, the Ministry of Plenty is referred to as miniprod (suggesting, however tacitly, that this is the Ministry of Production). In the book, this ministry is referred to as miniplenty. Similarly, Winston’s working place is named the Records Department (or recdep) of the Ministry of Truth in the book. This nomenclature is changed to minirec (something closer to Ministry of Records than Ministry of Truth) in the film. c) Association In the novel, members of the Inner and Outer Party refer to each other as “comrade”. This term has been changed to “sister” and “brother” in the movie. Similarly, in the book, both Julia and Winston pay a call to O’Brien at his residence within Victory Mansions looking for information about the Brotherhood’s membership. Only Winston is seen meeting up with O’Brien in the movie. It is also important to note that the agenda of the meeting is rather ambiguous in the movie. Additionally, O’Brien does not reveal his membership in the Brotherhood, which he does in the book. d) Exposure The film fails to show the real reasons why Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford were exposed as counterrevolutionaries and traitors. These reasons are clearly laid out in George Orwell’s work. e) Death-Worship In the movie, there is no mention of Death-Worship or Neo-Bolshevism. These terms are well described in the book as the respective (albeit functionally identical) ideologies wielded by the rival super-states of Eastasia and Eurasia. f) Goldstein’s Book In both the movie and the television play from 1954, O’Brien gives Winston Goldstein’s illegal book, having disguised it as a Newspeak dictionary. This happens when Winston and O’Brien first meet at the latter’s apartment. In the novel, the book is handed to Winston in a briefcase that oddly looks like his own smack in the middle of Hate Week and after the war alignments have been altered (or not, according to doublethink). O’Brien used the Newspeak dictionary as his pretext for giving his address to Winston. g) Winston Last but not least, in the book, Winston’s spirit is effectively decimated until he submits to the love he wields for Big Brother. In the film, Winston cannot force himself to adore Big Brother; although he was broken, Winston’s spirit in the film was shown as being too strong. Conclusion Over and above everything else, there were remarkable differences between the 1984 novel and its film adaptation. Although the similarities were there for sure, the magnanimity of the differences begs any interested party to prefer the book to the novel.
